How Many Practice Questions Do You Need Before the ASWB Exam?
It's the most common question in exam prep: "How many questions should I do?" The honest answer: fewer than you think — if they're the right kind.
The Research Baseline
Testing-effects research consistently shows that retrieval practice with feedback outperforms re-reading by large margins. But studies also show diminishing returns after approximately 600–800 well-processed items for a single exam — beyond that, gains come from breadth (new topics) rather than volume (more of the same).
Quality Beats Quantity — The 3x Rule
One question with a thorough rationale you study carefully is worth roughly three questions you race through. A rationaled question teaches you:
- The tested concept (what the exam considers correct)
- The priority logic (why FIRST/MOST/BEST points to it)
- The distractor logic (what wrong answers look like and why they're tempting)
That's why every question in our LBSW, LMSW, and LCSW free sets includes a full rationale — not just "B is correct."
Recommended Volume by Exam Tier
- ASWB Bachelors: 300–500 questions across all content areas, minimum 2 full timed sets
- ASWB Masters: 400–700 questions, minimum 3 full timed sets
- ASWB Clinical: 500–800 questions, minimum 4 full timed sets, heavy on ethics and diagnosis sequencing
The Right Way to Do Practice Questions
- Timed from day one. 85 seconds per question, always. Speed is trainable.
- Review rationales for correct answers too. Right-for-the-wrong-reason is the silent killer.
- Track by content area. A spreadsheet beats memory: note your weakest domains and drill them.
- Retake missed questions after 2 weeks. Spaced retrieval converts misses into durable learning.
