LCSW Study Plan 2026: A 10-Week Schedule for the Clinical Exam
The Clinical exam rewards depth over breadth. This 10-week plan assumes 8–10 study hours per week and uses free rationaled practice as its backbone.
Week 1: Diagnostic Baseline
Take our free LCSW practice test under timed conditions. Record your score and note which content areas produced your misses. Set up a tracking spreadsheet: content area, topic, why you missed (knowledge vs. reasoning vs. timing).
Weeks 2–3: Diagnosis & Assessment (30% of the exam)
Master the disorders the Clinical exam tests most: depressive disorders, bipolar spectrum, PTSD/ASD vs. adjustment disorder, the personality disorders, psychotic disorders, substance-related disorders, and neurocognitive disorders. For each, drill: What distinguishes it from its two closest neighbors? Suicide risk assessment gets dedicated time — intent, plan, means, preparatory behavior, protective factors. This is the single most-tested skill on the Clinical exam.
Weeks 4–5: Psychotherapy Models & Clinical Interventions (26%)
For each major modality — CBT, DBT, psychodynamic, motivational interviewing, solution-focused, IPT, trauma-focused (PE, CPT, EMDR) — learn: core theory, key techniques, and best-fit populations. The exam tests model selection: which approach for which client presentation. Study the contrasts, not just the definitions.
Week 6: Ethics & Professional Practice (20%)
The NASW Code in applied form: confidentiality exceptions, duty to protect/proceed-and-protect variations by state, dual relationships, supervision ethics, documentation, and the private-practice scenarios unique to the Clinical level — subpoenas, custody evaluations, fees, termination. Our Clinical set drills these directly.
Week 7: HBSE & Human Development (24%)
Lifespan theory, attachment, family systems, trauma's developmental impact, and cultural formulation. Two days max — this is largely review-level for experienced clinicians.
Weeks 8–9: Full Timed Simulations
Two full 4-hour simulations per week. Every miss gets a written rationale in your own words. Target: consistent 78%+ on mixed sets. Review our free questions' rationales as your answer-key logic model.
Week 10: Taper & Peak
Half-volume studying. One light timed set mid-week. Day before the exam: no studying — walk, sleep, prepare logistics. Test morning: normal caffeine, protein breakfast, arrive 30 minutes early.
How to Use the Free Questions in This Plan
The free Clinical set works three ways: diagnostic (Week 1), daily drilling between content blocks (Weeks 2–7), and rationale study for reasoning patterns (throughout). The rationales teach the elimination logic the Clinical exam demands — why the "true but secondary" answer is wrong.
