LCSW Supervision Hours Explained: Requirements, Counting, and Documentation

Published October 2026 · 7 min read

The LCSW isn't earned in a classroom — it's earned in supervised clinical hours. Understanding the rules before you start collecting them can save you a year.

How Many Hours? (It Depends on Your State)

Requirements vary significantly:

Always verify with your state board — requirements change, and the map of where your hours can be earned (state of supervision vs. state of licensure) matters.

What Counts as "Clinical" Hours?

Generally countable: psychotherapy/counseling with individuals, families, and groups; clinical assessment and diagnosis; treatment planning; clinical case management; clinical consultation; record-keeping directly tied to clinical work. Generally NOT countable: purely administrative work, fundraising, non-clinical case management (varies), supervision of others, and hours gained outside the supervision arrangement.

Supervision Requirements

The Documentation Mistakes That Cost People Months

  1. No contract on file before starting. Hours earned before a formal plan exists may be void in some states.
  2. Wrong supervisor credentials. Hours supervised by an LMSW or out-of-state supervisor without board approval often don't count.
  3. Missing signatures or late verification. Get supervision logs signed monthly, not at the end of 3,000 hours.
  4. Assuming reciprocity. Moving states mid-accumulation? Check whether hours transfer before you move.
  5. Vague logs. "Clinical services" isn't enough — document population, modalities, and setting specifics where required.

The Strategic View

Supervision hours are also exam prep in disguise — every assessment, risk evaluation, and ethical dilemma you handle under supervision is a live version of an ASWB Clinical question. Candidates who actively connect supervised practice to exam content report shorter study times.
